Great buffet. Lots of choices in meats and veggies. Didn't care for the potato salad but everything else was pretty good. The bbq is unsauced and has a good flavor on its own. There are 4 available sauces and three of four were a hit, we didn't care much for the orangeburg sweet and the Midlands mustard was a pleasant surprise. The fried chicken was well seasoned and lightly coated. As for the sides the creamed silver queen corn and Mac and cheese were very good as was the squash casserole. We finished off with the banana pudding as you should and were not disappointed. All in all it was a tasty value and we will be going back.

Although it has moved from its location down the road, the quality remains the same and the seating is expanded. This is a must stop (and sometimes twice) when visiting Edisto Island.

On our way to Edisto Beach we stopped at this BBQ place that looked like a hole in the wall. Wow, were we pleasantly surprised! The food is outstanding, the service friendly, and the inside is quaint and clean. We had the all-you-can-eat buffet and the only concern we can share is -- you will eat more than you should because it is so delicious. The variety is awesome. What a treat. They are open only Thursday - Saturday (bummer) between October and May. During the summer they add Wednesday.

This is the best BBQ ever! I've tried a lot of BBQ and this is by far my favorite. So much so that we had my wedding on Edisto and BoBo catered it! All my guest keep telling me how good the food was. Thank you!

I keep coming back. Sometimes I wonder why -- it's all SO stereotypical for a southern buffet/BBQ joint. :) It's in a gas station parking lot for goodness sake. But it's fun to come here now and again. If you're going to Edisto Island to the beach, it is totally worth coming here for lunch (if you're hungry. Like, really hungry.) Double check their hours, they're not open every day (I think it's Thurs-Sun?).

Friendly people, obviously a local joint. The buffet is fantastic, so many choices and in my book - the only way to go. Their fried chicken is fantastic, hush puppies delightful, and OMG the pulled pork!! 4 different local sauces, plus hot sauce. The vegetable selection is great, the real deal! They're moving down the road a bit (next to the tru value I believe) in summer 2014..

Newer location, moved to the new location closer to Edisto Beach a year or two ago, same great food! See my review from 11/4/2013!

We had the buffet and the selections were vast. It smelled just like Grandma's house when you walk in. The veggies tasted fresh but needed a little seasoning. This didn't bother us much as we understand that a buffet caters to so many people. Staff was friendly and very helpful. Sweet tea and lemonade were tasty and they had 4 different types of sauces on the table. The Carolina Mustard(?) was our favorite. They also had all the other sauces one would expect to see at a BBQ joint like Texas Pete and Hot Vinegar. Restaurant was clean and they use paper plates, forks and napkins. Pricing was fair. It was $11.25 for the buffet. They had several dessert selections that sounded yummy but we were too full to indulge this time. We will certainly go back!

Let me start off by saying the food was very good. The service by their "professional" caterers, including the man himself, not so much. Considering we paid over 2, 000 for a wedding and we saw that they took trays of food back to their truck. Seriously? We paid for it. That shouldn't have happened. They should have boxed up the ALL the food and left it there. I would consider that practically STEALING from us. Wow. Just wow. Not to mention they were 30 minutes late to bring us the food. They were right down the street. Poor customer service unfortunately.

Great southern bbq. I love the food, just what I'm looking for to eat in this area, when searching for bbq. The format isn't for everyone, and the decor clearly isn't a priority. There's no need to place an order for anything. Most anything you want from a bbq place is on the buffet. If you make your way out to edisto a stop here should be a priority.

Sadly I can only give 2 stars. My family has been coming to Edisto since my parents were children, and I for the past 27 years. Since its opening, Po Pigs has always been a favorite of ours. We were excited to see PP in its new, larger, location closer to the beach, but we were unfortunately disappointed. While the staff has always been nothing but friendly, welcoming, and accommodating, it seems the food now lacks the unique flavors it used to have when being prepared on a smaller scale. The green beans required quite a bit of salt, the sweet potato casserole was sour, and macaroni was very oily. Please, Po Pigs, go back to your roots!

I am not a BBQ man but this was some of the best BBQ that I have ever had without any need for sauce. The pulled pork was tender and juicy. The service was great. It cost around $7.50 for a platter which was a great price point. They had an all you can eat Buffet which I was tempted on getting but decided that a to go order was in mind. We also grabbed some she crab soup for $4 which was a good price for the amount. I had never had she crab soup and probably won't again as I am not a fan. They pour a sauce over the rice that makes it delicious along with some pretty good coleslaw. This place is worth a drive out to test it out. Between this place and Flowers, i would never have leave the island for a meal. They are only open Thurs-Sun with some exceptions in the summer. Stop in here and let your belly explode with meat. It is also a nice change of pace when all I had eaten was seafood for the last few days.

Fun old fashioned southern low country cooking in buffet style. Everything was fresh and tasty.

This review is for the new restaurant as the gas station one has closed. This was my first time at the restaurant and was pleased. I went in with low expectations and it wound up being a very good experience. I enjoyed their potato salad as compared to another review. Most of the items I tried were good. I am not a fan of pulled chicken so i left that alone. The sauces are good as there are 4 of them. The orangeburg one is definitely unique and has a nice taste but not for me. The fried chicken is good, a tad salty but I had seconds. I enjoyed the mac and cheese. The pulled pork (and chicken) come unseasoned which is nice as it does taste good as a stand alone. The best item there, which all were a but equal, but the gumbo really seemed to be well executed. Spicy, nice sausage, good broth. Lastly the hush puppies. Oooooo the hush puppies were fabulous but dont fill up on them. I am uploading a picture as well of our meal. If you drive by on your way to the beach, i would suggest it. For the price, lunch was $11/pp, its a nice deal. They have regular bbq plates and daily specials that seem very reasonable. Away from the food, the decor is nothing special but dont let that discourage you. When we were there it was very quiet with a few tables and no background noise, i felt bad speaking as I have a loud voice and clearly an out of towner.

Reading the review in the local Edisto Island tourist guide, I found myself in the presence of greatness and I did not even know it. I quickly gathered my favorite foodie friend Todd up and we headed back across the island to investigate what was ranked by a national magazine as the #1 BBQ joint in the COUNTRY. To say that I was skeptical about this gas station restaurant being #1 at anything is a stretch. Strike one to me was that it is a buffet. My buddy ordered off the menu, but I wanted the full experience and got the buffet. He got the ribs and the meat on the buffet was the pulled pork. The ribs were good, but they came with sauce on them and the sauce was not my favorite flavor. So, if you want to use a sauce off the table or try all of them, ask for your ribs dry. The pork on the buffet was the same as the other guy with us got when he ordered a pork plate. The flavor of the meat was as good as it gets. I give it an A+. The overall grade from me is a bit lower because I did not like any of the 4 sauces they had very much. The spicy mustard sauce was OK, but I would never choose it if there was another option. The veggies were old-school good veggies. Sweet corn off the cobb was the best thing up there. When I went back for seconds, it was for pork and corn. It was excellent. The rest of the veggies were good, not great. #1 in the country? Not even close. #1 in Edisto Island? You freaking betcha! Would I recommend it to travelers in the area? Heck yes. I love a local, hole-in-the-wall more than anything. Would I drive out there if I was in Charleston (45 min)? Nope.

We have been going to Edisto Island for more years than I care to remember and never noticed this place. It is attached to a gas station convenience store, not the best place for a BBQ joint. We noticed their sign last time we drove by. It is located on the main highway (174) leading to Edisto Beach, but nothing else is around there. Given its location, we actually weren't keen to go there, but we have never seen BBQ on Edisto and decided to give it a try. We are glad we did, very glad. This place rocks. As soon as you walk in the door, all traces of convenience store and gas station vanish, a much needed reprieve from the mundane. We could be in a stand alone BBQ joint in the middle of nowhere. Actually, this place is in the middle of nowhere, but that gas station sure is a put-off. But, you enter a narrow space, with some booths along the wall and tables. The food counter and kitchen are at the back. The owner was there, as he probably always is, this is one of those great BBQ places that is only open Thursday through Saturday, Wednesday, as well, during the summer tourist season. Most of the best BBQ places are only open a few days a week. It takes a lot of work and time to properly cook a hog, including nights tending the fire. It turns out that there was a food reporter there at the time from a well known magazine. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of it. It may have been Southern Living, but I seem to remember a New York connection. Anyway, she was impressed with the food, as well, and did an interview with the owner. There was a typical BBQ joint buffet, all you can eat for a good price, and sweet tea, of course. You can get beer and wine at this place, a rarity and probably a nod to the Yankee tourists. Southerners, no matter how much they drink, usually don't when eating BBQ (unless, of course, you are making it yourself, where vast quantities of beer are essential for those long hours tending the fire). We actually got the sweet tea, which was very good. Lynn got her usual veggie plate, but added some pulled pork. and I loaded down with meat and some token veggies. Always pulled pork for me, that is how I judge good BBQ. That, and hash over rice. I also got some baked beans, scalloped potatoes, and tomato vegetable soup. I sampled Lynn's turnip greens, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and cabbage. She also got slaw and a couple of other things. Slaw is one of those Southern things I just don't like. Lynn said it was good. My pulled pork was the highlight of the meal, as it should have been. Great taste, very tender with just the right amount of fat, and not overboard with the sauce. Great BBQ. I also loved the pork skins and you rarely find them done well. When you do, they are usually sold out in a manner of hours. No bagfuls of frozen skins to plop in the deep fryer, these come right from the pig and there is only so much to go around. The hash was good, this was non-liver based hash, and it was on par with other great BBQ joint hash. Onto the veggies. Everything I tasted was good. The soup was homemade and perfect for a cool day (it was January). The turnip greens also had turnip chunks in them and they were excellent. I always put hot sauce on greens, because I like the heat, and did with these, but they were nicely done in fatback and didn't need any sauce. Baked beans and scalloped potatoes were pretty standard, very good but not award winning. Like I said before, the pulled pork was the highlight.

First of all - you have never tasted true southern BBQ until you have eaten here. I went to Edisto Beach with South Carolina natives, and came here for lunch. They all swore this was as good (or better) than their momma's cookin! Thats saying something! Its a small place attached to a run down gas station. From the outside it really doesnt look like much. Dont let that scare you off. Inside, the place is small, maybe 10 - 12 picnic tables/booths? And the decor is pretty plain. But you dont go here for the decor. Its all about the food. For $7.95 you can get your fill of pulled pork/pulled turkey with the option of 4 mouth watering sauces. I loved the Carolina Gold and North Carolina vinegar options, but they also have a sweet version and a super spicy. The fried chicken was super crunchy on the outside and flavoured just right! Meat was super juicy on the inside - tasted like they had cooked it to order even though I got it off the buffet! If you are lucky they will have fried chicken livers and gizzards - sounds icky but I promise you its worth trying! Fall-off the bone ribs, Gumbo, mac and cheese, candied sweet potato, collards, green beans w/ ham hock, coleslaw, potato salad, hush puppies, pork rinds, squash cassarole, okra casserole, dirty rice, and so many more options.... I cant even remember them all. Trust me you will not go hungry! You have to pay extra for a beverage (unlimited refills on iced tea) and extra for dessert but even adding those on it came out to just about $12 per person. And the dessert is well worth it! I had the peach cobbler that literally melted in my mouth. The banana pudding is a southern staple that you must try if you have never had it before. Pecan pie, peach pie, key lime pie, zebra cake and more are on offer made fresh each day. They also have a menu - but I have never been able to get past the buffet to try anything else. They also do take-out and catering. It is only open on weekends (Thursday-Sunday) for limited hours (they change in-season vs out of season) so call ahead. When you are planning all of your stops at Edisto Beach - this is a "must" on that list. Finger lickin good. Enjoy y'all!

The food here was atrocious. I was immediately turned off by the buffet. The only meat available was pulled pork. Mac n cheese was crunchy and eggy. Baked beans tasted like they had been out for days. The only good thing I had we're the half pickled vegetable salad--cukes, onions, tomatoes in vinegar.

Don't blink or you will pass it! The bbq is delicious and you can sauce it yourself. They had black bean soup that was rich and savory - don't forget to add the onions, cheese and sour cream for a transcendent soup experience. Make sure you try the hushpuppies - cornmeal, a little sweet, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. And as much as you think you should, do not pass up the fried pork rinds. They are crisp, not greasy, and just salty enough. I haven't had pork rinds in YEARS because they usually make me a little naseous but I sent my kid back to grab seconds (ok, I'll admit it, thirds).

Pretty good Southern cooking. Great fried chicken, yummy pulled pork, lots of sides veggies for a great price. Come hungry all you can eat.

Edisto Beech is my favorite summer spot. This bbq is average at best. Ribs were below average and cost extra.. Friendly place with the typical buffet assortment. A food review used as an advertisement in the local paper says this is one of the 10 best bbq in the country. Dont believe all that you read.

You have to understand something about old style bbq to really appreciate this place. South Carolina Pulled Pork is not supposed to be spicy with over the top, exotic seasonings and presentation; it's almost a comfort food. You want it hot or something - that's what the sauces are for. Good pork, treated well and slowly cooked develops a wonderful flavor that should not depend upon the sauce, which is an after thought. Traditional bbq CAN be smoked, but this is not necessary. Smoked pork is good, but so is slow cooked pork sans carcinogens. It's almost like the difference between Irish whiskey and Scotch whiskey. The Irish taught the world how to make whiskey, but they dried their grains in closed containers; the Scots didn't have that ability so their whiskey acquired a smokey taste from being dried over peat fires on open racks. If you are looking for pit SMOKED bbq, this ain't the place. If you are cooking over an open fire, you get some smoke. Non-smoked is still bbq. Traditional vegetables at a good bbq place aren't crisp, barely heated, al dente baby greens. Traditional vegetables at a bbq place are COOKED. The flavor should be reliable, recognizable and non-threatening. Bo Bo's soups are always good and the burger never disappoints. The buffet is replenished constantly. The food is reliably good and - don't laugh, now - healthy eating on Edisto. The atmosphere is uber bbq. What atmosphere there is does the genre proud. There is nothing cutsie about it - just honest bbq. Authentic as a descriptor would not be out of place. The buffet with ice tea will run you about $11.00 before tip. You can eat until you embarrass yourself. There is essentially no staff turnover and it is not unusual to find Bo Bo himself in attendance.

Bummer. I wanted to like this place, and dragged friends out with me. It got lots of great reviews elsewhere. Maybe it was the time of the year - we were on the island in late September, and so there was probably less traffic than there would be in the summer. I wasn't a fan, but everyone else I was with actually hated it. It's on the side of a gas station, but I was expecting that and hey, sometimes roadside dives are great. However, the day we were there, all the food on the buffet seemed really old, soggy when it wasn't supposed to be or dried out if it should have been moist. I think we tried most everything, hoping for a save, but it just wasn't good. The barbecue pork and chicken weren't good either. The meat was dried out and unseasoned. You couldn't add enough barbecue sauce to make it right. All the sides were pretty bland. I liked the hush puppies, but no one else did. So there you go. To give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they had an off day, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again.

This was our third visit to Po Pigs and we'll be back for more. The pork was tender and moist, the fried chicken was also perfection. On this visit there were no short ribs, but they were great when we had them previously. Even better than the meat is the amazing array of vegetable sides. I normally don't like okra because my mother's was always slimy. Po Pig's is fresh with a slight bite. The squash casserole is yummy, and the fresh creamed corn is a little bit of heaven. There is some secret ingredient that I can't put my finger on and it makes the corn taste better than I've ever had. We took a large family group and even the pickiest cousins found something that they liked in the buffet. Po Pigs even got my son to like chicken liver. Granted, he thought he was eating popcorn chicken, but then decided he liked it after all.
